Presentation of RARE-Bestpractices at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a founding member of the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (IRDiRC). IRDiRC is a key partner for RARE-Bestpractices, both for dissemination of project deliverables and for establishment of international collaborations in the field of rare diseases. The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) has been officially established to transform the translational science process so that new treatments and cures for disease can be delivered to patients faster. NCATS strives to develop innovations to reduce, remove or bypass costly and time-consuming bottlenecks in the translational research pipeline in an effort to speed the delivery of new drugs, diagnostics and medical devices to patients. In this context, Prof. Rumen Stefanov (BAPES) presented the RARE-Bestpractices project during a special rare disease meeting at NCATS on April 22, 2016. Prof. Stefanov stressed on the importance of RARE-Bestpractices as a leading international rare disease research platform. He outlined the main project deliverables, such as RareGUIDELINE, RareGAP, RARE-Bestpractices training tools and Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs Journal.
